University of Illinois in civil engineering. Belonged to Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Notes athletes who never drank. Paid $7.00 week for room and board in frat house. Notes summer jobs with Illinois Transit System interurban lines - greasing switches.
NON-FARM WORK
Quit school to go into insurance business like his father. Had office in Ferguson Building in 1907.
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
Tells what he witnessed in 1908 Springfield Race Riot, including abandoned street cars, quiet downtown, National Guard troops, a mob struggling with a black man. Chamber of Commerce met & businessmen vowed to protect their black employees with guns. National Guard patrols streets.
