- Named by aunt who wanted a name that Kentuckians, as was their habit, could not turn into a cutesy nickname. Description of first house after marriage & cost. Gutters froze and ruined walls. Cost seven dollars a month with no electricity. Then moved to and bought a cousin's house for $750, $50 down. Knew the Seligman's, part of a Jewish community in Athens Owned a store. Story of original Jewish settler has a store and dance hall, hired grandfather to play, but no one came & he had them play anyway. Her father-in-law was a brick layer. Big Charlie had mules & went by train to town daily to play the market. Leland became a telephone operator.
