Born in 1894, Newton, IL., one of seven children. Mother died at 31 of typhoid, caught from husband returning from caring for sick father. Left seven children in care of husband, a carpenter and cabinetmaker. Margaret only has one memory of her mother. Oldest daughter had to take on care of house and younger children. Mother died at 25 of water on the lung.
FAMILY FINANCES
Father worked hard, raised a garden to feed family. He had two city lots where he raised chickens, had a cow for milk, a barn, and bee hives. He sold eggs and honey. Also worked in a shop in town and made cabinets, desks.
FARMHOUSE
Description of house (small) with a parlor where she entertained boyfriends. Carpeting was engrained, smooth in parlor, rag in dining room, with straw under it for padding. Had peach orchard with bee hive nearby.
