FARM WORK
Description of farm life & activities during the summer months. School for younger children in May & June with different teacher. Planting corn & sorghum. Description of sorghum. Children stripped "skins" of sorghum in fall. Father took sorghum to neighbor's sorghum mill to get barrel of molasses.
FOOD & MEALS
Describes mother's large garden that had currants (used for jelly, pies, & mincemeat). Description of ingredients mincemeat pie. Mentions large raisins bought at the store.
CROPS
Father raised pumpkins for livestock.
FOOD & MEALS
Description of making of head cheese from cattle & hog heads which were ground & then salted & peppered. "Made wonderful sandwiches." Describes making of liverwurst using liver & fat, salt, pepper, & a bit of onion. Mrs. Saiter's in-laws were of German extraction so they had some different foods & different methods of food preparation. Describes making of a mush using broth, thickened with corn meal, & placing meat back in broth.
