- THRESHING MACHINE
- Describes how threshing machine were first run with horses & later steam. Steam threshers used coal for power & farmers were expected to furnish the coal. Wood had not been used for steam because timber was scarce, having been cleared for plowing.
- ENVIRONMENT
- Description of appearance of land when central Illinois was first settled. Notes designation of land as "timber lots" so people without timber on their farm could buy the lots to obtain wood for fuel
- COAL MINING
- Miners' strikes occurred. Many miners lived on the north side of the city. Merchants carried their credit during strikes. This was about 1908.
