Gray's firm had a contract to collect bills for stores that were owed money by miners. Some were on strike and some were just poor. Strikes were usually settled before people became desperate. Speculated that some mine owners were local and some corporations like Peabody. Some railroads folded about 1918. When they went, so did the surrounding mines.
