SPECIALTY LIVESTOCK
Have 6,000 young birds, never will have more than that. Over a year there will be 30,000 birds that pass through the farm. Also has quail. Costs caused him to quit raising pheasant.
LIVESTOCK CARE
Has farm Bio security to prevent disease & monitors people coming to the farm. Disinfects a lot to control flies. Notes that sparrows are a problem. Describes fly control system including fly traps. Notes he removes 10 pounds of flies a week
FARM EQUIPMENT
Incubators regulate heat & humidity. Notes use of tractor & little green wagon. Describes fences used for Pheasants & netting on the top of the pen for protection. Raptors try to kill pheasant & are a big problem.
MARKETING
Most pheasants are used for hunting. Some birds are used for dog training & a few sold for eating. Some buy for aesthetic purposes. Notes that pheasants are not a native species, but were imported in 1850 from China and Mongolia. Feed costs have increased considerably.
SPECIALTY LIVESTOCK
LIVESTOCK CARE
Part of the Chronic Wasting Disease Association. Head of any deer that die is submitted for testing. Opines that hunters are more to blame for spreading disease than farmers. Also test for tuberculosis and brucellosis so shipping animals to other states is permitted.
