- John Deere struggled in the 1830s and came to Illinois after an arrest for debt back east. Came to Grande Tour, IL., near Dixon. Leonard Andress, Amos Bosworth, hired him as blacksmith. Found broken steel blade and turned it into a plow, sold a few. Sales ability. Moved to Moline in 1838; Robert Tate, John Gould came with him and they built a factory. Stayed competitive during hard times.
