- John Deere was self-educated, well-read, definite ideas about work. Son was a prodigy that brought modern methods to the company. Henry Sheldon Museum in Vermont gave us some knowledge of pre-Illinois life. Deere helped to found Republican Party. No proof of any connection with Abraham Lincoln. Interesting to research. First ten years in Moline, 1848-1858, when Illinois became plow-making center. David Sears built mills on the Mississippi. Rock Island competes. Railroad arrives in 1854.
