- BACKGROUND
- She was hired part time at Kent State where she taught children's literature and one writing class that was "a bomb." Then she went to work for the University of Wisconsin doing a radio show for children writers called "The Author is You." Came to Springfield was Sangamon State University was started, did the radio show from there. She did the show for 19 years. One reason she stopped was because the creative writing she was receiving was in the five paragraph essay format, which she says is death for creative writing. Says she has never used a red pencil on a paper in her life. Taught another writing class that was also "a bomb." When she taught it at Kent State the students were all very bland. When she taught it at Sangamon State the students were very cut-throat. Her publisher wanted another book so she started writing a book for her class. This helped her realize what was wrong with the classes she taught
