- GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS
- General comparison of farming in the US & in Europe. The Kellogg Corporation footed the bill for his international travel. Government subsidies in Europe had a huge effect on farmers. In the US, farmers were encouraged to adapt to new technology, whereas in Europe they were forced to maintain quotas. In Southern Illinois there is a family that farms 18,000 acres, which is larger than the typical family farm. To buy larger, expensive equipment, you have to farm more land to make your money back. The biggest difference between European and American farming is that in Europe they have set quotas of what needs to be produced per animal or hectare. Some government policies did not work, like set-asides. Believer in capitalism & the free market. Set-asides were supposed to limit production to raise prices.
- FARM BUSINESS
- In the 1980s, farmers would produce for the whole market, now they are producing for fuel, food, and feed.
