- Sold old cows to butcher who paid the most. Because of no refrigeration, meat & other items had to be bought every day. Mentions smokehouse & grandmother butchering a hog in town. Mrs. Williams notes that they smoked beef as well as pork. Onions & potatoes dried in the smokehouse.
- RECOLLECTIONS
- No plumbing. Had outhouse. Washed on the back porch. Story of chickens laying eggs under house & Mrs. Williams crawling under house to get eggs. Baths taken after heating water on boiler in kitchen. Did not have water pump, just a bucket to the well. Grandmother was strict, but no whippings. Story of Mrs. Williams & the neighbor who grew melons & cantaloupes.
