TRAVEL
Tells of taking train to get to where she taught & going to showboats. One of her teachers came to DeSoto from Carbondale by train.
CHILDHOOD ACTIVITIES
Had to do her chores (emptying ash, etc) before she could go ice-skating. Read by lamplight in evening. Grandmother would not let her have cards, but they played dominoes. Did schoolwork & read to her grandmother. Story of her grandmother putting a piece of coal in her Christmas stocking, but below it was a nice ring. Played with dolls. Describes dolls & their clothing.
MARRIAGE
Did not take any of her old clothes with her after she got married. A gift was the hauling of a piano from her grandmother's to her new home. Then she found out she needed those old clothes.
HOLIDAYS
Only had a Christmas tree 1 yr even though her grandmother grew the trees. After marriage she had Christmas trees. Discusses candles on trees. Mentions family Christmas meals with relatives.
