- FERTILIZER
- Cannot farm without fertilizer. Notes buying limestone & delivering it to Sullivan on trains & horse drawn wagons taking it to farms in early years of Farm Bureau. Tests soils on 4 year rotation. Lime application will last about 4 yrs. In early years used only manure with father. Livestock now just pastured so little need for spreading manure, & just buy various chemical fertilizers. Discusses application of anhydrous ammonia & other fertilizers. Fertilizer application equipment often owned by local Co-Op. Gives prices of various fertilizers & notes cost increase & relationship to cost of oil. Could not rely on hog manure for all nutrients. Application is monitored & spread is uniform, except for limestone for which maps of soil ph are needed. Notes use of GPS in mapping soil chemistry & plugging digital map into fertilizer application equipment for accurate application.
