GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS
Talks about GMOs and the advances of plants and animals. Orion doesn't believe that organic farming is enough to feed the entire world. Monsanto is working on a drought resistant corn. Almost where you can get a pound of meat for a pound of feed. Ethical issues here with cloning livestock, can lead to cloning humans. Talks about cloning and taking DNA from animals. Concern that there is too much use of one seed and something comes along and wipes them out. Talks about Bird Flu and Mad Cow Disease. First contact with Mad Cow Disease that affected this country was in Alberta, Canada. England had already been ravaged by the disease. It's a disease that destroys the nervous system. Fear of it attacking humans, though no confirmation of it actually killing humans. Orion feels it is the biggest non-story he's ever covered. Countries closed their borders to American beef that to this day haven't been fully reopened. Canada has had maybe a dozen cases, a couple in the United States. Reinforces the need for the National Animal Identification Act.
