ELECTRIFICATION
Discussion of electricity and change in kitchen appliances again. For the milking & washing machines, you just changed out gasoline with electric motor. Had ice box in basement. Would get ice from milk man for 10 cents.
FARM EQUIPMENT
Discusses equipment used to store milk & sterilize milk cans, etc. Discusses a "can cooler". Minimum $4 electric bill. Rarely used over $4 except with chicken work, because used an electric brooder.
FAMILY
Don's children and recreation. Two girls and a boy in the middle. Went to movies with them on bargain nights. Sunday evening was $.35 & children free. Dish nights when dishes given away. Raffles.
ELECTRIFICATION
Got a radio, even in barn with electricity. Story of cows becoming used to strange voices on radio. Before they were skittish when strangers came around.
FARM ORGANIZATIONS
Had to read to keep up. Farm Magazines & Extension Service more valuable than college for farmer. His college would have been obsolete with technological changes. Discusses benefits of Farm Bureau membership. He was a Farm Bureau director for 32 years, since early 50's. They supported Extension. Auto insurance through Farm Bureau.
FARMING METHODS
Phosphate fertilizer used and paid off. Previously only manure used as fertilizer. Using chemicals to fertilized was just not an accepted practice. Discusses hybrid corn. Quit picking own seed corn after hybrids became available. Notes high price of hybrid corn.
