FAMILY BACKGROUND
Bert was 11 when family moved to Honey Bend. Discusses the "home farm". Called home farm because they have owned it for a long time. Five acres still belong to brother's family. Much was sold "under the hammer" (auction?). Brother had good timber & cattle business. Cattle sold for feeders. Home farm was 2 miles from Honey Bend.
TOWNS
Honey Bend was too small to go to, even for parties. Bert did buy house in Honey Bend with help from father & father-in-law. Lived there 5 years after he was married. Honey Bend had 2 little stores. One store had the Post Office. Mentions family named Crawford who wouldn't sell to railroad. Sold land, but got many concessions from railroad, one of which was Post Office. Mentions how railroad picked up mail from hooks on poles.
ENVIRONMENT
Mentions hunting squirrel, wood hens, rabbits, & quail in the timber. Hunted, fished, & swam in creek. Caught catfish & some native perch (not as good to eat as bluegill). Mentions other people seining the creek for buffalo & carp. After dinner always went to swimming hole. Swam naked. Mentions story of diving right into log at swimming hole.
