NON-FARM WORK
Taught 3/12 years but quit once married. After husband died, taught for 20 yrs in a one-room schoolhouse in Westpoint. "Wonderful to teach in a country school." Did not have workbooks like in today's school. Younger students learned much from older students. Story about young boy reading poem about horse. Boy learned to read because he was interested in horses and has continued a career in showing horses. Class size was about 32. But got smaller through time until consolidation into Unit 27. "Any teacher must love the children and love their work." Concerns that teaching has become too business-like.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Did not attend a farm school. Attended school in Plymouth, IL, moved in 3rd grade to Beardstown, IL. Graduated elementary school in 1910.
COLLEGE EDUCATION
Attended Western Illinois Teacher's College from 1910-1914. Went to summer school to help her in her teaching career. Sorry that she did not get a degree, but experience was marvelous.
