- CHILDHOOD ACTIVITIES
- Jeanette was given a pony by her father and told to take care of it. Tells about the life lessons she learned about handling difficult 'personalities' and situations. She was an only child who often did not have interactions with other children.
- CHILDHOOD WORK
- She picked and prepared the vegetables for dinners. Met the men returning from the fields; listened to their stories and news.
- SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
- Heavily involved in 4-H in high school. Girls' projects were domestic, such as sewing, cooking, and room improvement. Became a leader when they needed more. Everyone expected to present a talk. Mother was a judge of projects. County leader, Mrs. Carl Kirby, decided their group would enter a contest sponsored by a Chicago mail order house. District, County, district, then state levels. Winners went to the International Livestock Show final competition.
