- CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
- Attended Newton schools through high school. Played Portia senior year. Walked to school. Dynamite blasting cap exploded in had - friend walked her to doctor - saved one finger but lost three. Tells story of recent fall, where being dressed in fur hat saved her head.
- CHILDHOOD WORK
- Did most of housework except washing, that her father had sent out. She ironed using sad irons carried from stove in other room. Ironing board was just a board between chair and table.
- NON-FARM WORK
- She became a teacher right out of high school. Passed the teacher's exam & taught all grades in o ne-room school near Hidalgo. Then taught in Newton, 4th grade. Father gave her a watch for graduation. She had to quit teaching after she got married. Married women were not allowed to teach.
