FARM ORGANIZATIONS
One issues of the Illinois Agricultural Association was funding for highway, state roads, and rural roads. Farm-to-market roads should share in highway revenue funds. Second issue was increase in production. Farm Bureau participate in draft boards and rationing boards. Important 1940s issue was consolidation of schools, prompted by decreased rural population. Farm Bureau helped with County School Study Group. After war, prices fell. Farm Bureau lobby for federal legislation. Men make the organization principle; businessman and farmer combination in county leaders. Farm Bureau developed leaders of vision. Lobbied against high tariffs because they caused loss of overseas markets. McNary-Haugen bill providing a two-price system - domestic sales and exports - lobbied for by Farm Bureau. South did not like it. Deal to give them Mussel Shoals Development (fertilizer and power plants). Bill never passed. Refers to Kyle's book "The Farm Bureau through Three Decades."
