- ATTITUDE TOWARDS GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS
- He is sure that the answer to farmers' economic problems is the competitive market system.
- REFLECTIONS
- He resigned from the presidency of the Farm Bureau after 16 years because it was stressful, meant he missed a lot of family life, and he did not want to overstay his time. When he retired he believed that there would be no more battles over federal farm policies again.
- NON-FARM WORK
- He returned home but thought himself too old to farm. Illinois governor asked him to be on Board of Regents. Meets one day a month, but requires research to keep up with issues. He learned that faculties were trying to run universities as a community, not as a business, which he thinks they are. So as a board member, he wants to strengthen the power of the President and Board. Faculty should be involved in educational policy and courses of study but not finance.
