COMMODITY PRICES
Mr. Nelson discusses relationship between commodity, food, & fuel prices. Bush raised the renewable fuel standard to 15 billion gallons for corn based ethanol. The speculative market started investing in petroleum or corn. All this added up to increased prices for the consumer. Fertilizer prices tripled. The Farm Bureau was in support of increased renewable fuel sources. Brazil's comprehensive renewable energy policies have lead to self sufficiency.
ETHANOL
Phillip sees the productivity of ethanol increasing in the future. He says over the past ten years, the amount of water used to produce a gallon of ethanol has been reduced. At some point ethanol may have to me imported from Central America. Notes impact of free trade agreements. The Bush administration set goals for the production of ethanol, but there are many things in the way.
