- ETHANOL
- Thirty years ago Big Oil trashed the idea of ethanol and killed the idea. They would put an additive called MTBE in the gas to increase the octane. It was discovered that ethanol increased octane and was good for the environment and that MTBE was leaking into water reservoirs. The EPA banned MTBE and people started looking towards renewable corn based ethanol. Ethanol production has had a huge turn around. Has become much more efficient as research has been expanded. Some of the research is going on at SIU-E. In South America they have a larger sugar program and they pursue sugar-based ethanol.
