- GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS
- Mr. Shuman discusses his father's role as a leader of or a reflection of the farm bureau members. Most heated discussions for his father revolved around Federal government's role in agriculture & much is the same now. His father could convince people.
- COLLEGE EDUCATION
- Mr. Shuman tells of majoring in Agricultural Economics, but originally wanting to be a veterinarian. He joined the ROTC & US Army Reserve. Mentions his agricultural deferment. Mr. Shuman expresses his pride in his father & his speaking abilities. Father never pressured them to be farmers, just go to college.
- FAMILY FARM
- Mr. Shuman started farming his father's land after graduation & serving in Army Reserve. Tells of US Army Corps purchasing some of his father's farmland to control navigation on Mississippi River by controlling flooding on Kaskaskia. Got reasonable price for river bottom & steep land.
- LAND ACQUISITION
- Discussion of land acquisition by buying it, inheriting it, or leasing it. Describes Cash Lease vs. Crop-Share Lease (or Livestock Share). Believes Crop-Share is better, but over time believes both yield similar returns. Mr. Shuman discusses the farms owned separately & jointly with siblings, acreage, & his father's trust
