Country kids would go to town when the circus came. Big parade through downtown with wagons, elephants, show horses. Went to the showground. Tells a story about sitting in the bleachers when rain was dripping through the tent roof onto his friend's new purple hat. Paid a quarter to get in, more for seats better than bleachers. Acts were trapeze artists, tight-rope walkers, clowns, acrobats, fat lady. Lids could earn a few cents carrying water for the animals during the day. Was impressed at how the big elephant raised the big tent poles.
