- Describes in detail the process of curing and smoking pork. Fresh meat like spare ribs, liver, and heart had to be used up quickly. Describes in detail making sausage and the uses of sage.
- Used to have a garden with potatoes. Sometimes they would grow 60 bushel of potatoes in a year. Ate lots of potatoes. Stored the potatoes in bins in the cellar. Tried to sell them once, when their father was alive, but now the grocery stores do not buy them.
